The alternative energy consultants tell us that the transition from the petroleum-driven economy and society will not be a smooth one, on the whole. The amount of new technologies and infrastructures that need to be developed and built is staggering—even as Germany achieves powering 10% of the entire nation through the use of wind turbines and solar arrays, even as corporation after corporation is springing up, helped by various governments’ tax breaks and rebate incentives, to drive forward the alternative energy mission. We have lain dormant on alternative energy on the grand scale for so long that we now have to scramble to play catch-up as access to cheap oil lurks ever closer to being a thing of the past. When my husband and I moved from the city to the country eleven years ago we began to investigate ways in which we could conserve water. We were going to build a new home, have a sandpoint well and wanted to do what we could to decrease our water usage. We chose to get a composting toilet. Needless to say, it has been an experience beyond flushing, if you know what I mean. I’m going to tell you what the manufacturer’s don’t tell you. Please understand the following is our personal experience and may not always be what you hear from the manufacturer or ever be a problem for you if you choose this route of conservation. Read more

Recollecting the history of solar energy brings us back to the 1970s energy crisis and oil embargo which caused long lines in gasoline stations, high gasoline prices, and even caused panic among consumers and investors alike in the United States. Knowledge about oil being a non-renewable resource has been around since the 1800s. But it was only during and after the 70s energy crisis that people really began to realize the consequences of depending too much on an already depleting energy resource. Read more
